Coarse litterfall (woody litter greater than 2 cm diameter) was collected from cleared plots in the same sites as fine litterfall to quantify total aboveground litterfall in the reference forest. These data are used to calculate aboveground production and forest carbon and nutrient budgets.

Each 6.25 m2 plot was cleared of woody debris in Fall, 1995. Dry weight of coarse litterfall (>2 cm diameter) deposited in the plots is measured each June. Spruce/fir zone plots were established in 2001 and measured in 2002.
Six plots, each 2.5 x 2.5 m (6.26 m2), are located randomly within the large plots where fine litterfall is collected. Locations of the five sample sites were chosen to stratify the sampling by elevation zone. Sites are co-located with fine litter trap sites. Sample plots within the sites are distributed randomly.
Data Use Policy

1) Acceptable use. Use of the dataset will be restricted to academic, research, government or other not-for-profit professional purposes.

2) Redistribution. The data and metadata are provided for use by the Data User. The Data User will not redistribute the original Data Set or metadata to others without the explicit permission of the Principal Investigator.

3) Citation. It is considered a matter of professional ethics to acknowledge the work of other scientists. Thus, the Data User will properly attribute the Data Set in any publications or in the metadata of any derived data products that were produced using the Data Set. Citation should take the following general form: Creator, Year of Data Publication, Title of Dataset, Publisher, Dataset identifier.

8) Terms of Agreement. By accepting this Data Set, the Data User agrees to abide by the terms of this agreement. The Data Owner shall have the right to terminate this agreement immediately by written notice upon the Data User's breach of, or non-compliance with, any of its terms. The Data User may be held responsible for any misuse that is caused or encouraged by the Data User's failure to abide by the terms of this agreement.

Notes on Data: Samples were collected in 1996 and 1997 from all sites. In 1998, no samples were collected from the upper and high elevation plots because of the ice storm. The low and mid sites were collected as usual from 1998-2002. The high and upper sites were re-cleared in Summer 2001 and measured again in 2002. New sites were established in 2001 near the spruce-fir zone throughfall site. The data is physically located at the USDA Forest Service, Durham, NH.
