Watershed precipitation is estimated using the Thiessen Means
weighting method. Daily watershed precipitation values are a
weighted average of daily precipitation from standard gages in
or near the watershed. The weighting factor for each gage is the
fraction of the watershed area nearest that gage.

SAMPLING DESIGN
Precipitation data has been collected
with a network of 24 standard and 7 recording
rain gages beginning in 1956. See Dataset 13 for
collection details.
The analog charts on the recording
rain gages are changed approximatley weekly, at
which time the accumulation in the standard rain
gages is measured. The daily recording rain gage
data and weekly standard rain gage data are
entered into the computer. Missing data are
filled by estimation from other nearby gages. A
computer program uses the recording gage data to
prorate the standard gage data into daily
amounts, and calculates daily precipitation on
each gaged watershed by the Thiessen Mean
weighting method (Linsley et. al., 1958). A
table of weighting values is included in the
text file thiessen_weights.txt
(below)
WATERSHED AREA (ha)
Values used to calculate total
watershed daily precipitation. Precipitation
data from each standard rain gage (see Dataset
13) is weighted according to the fraction of the
watershed area nearest that gage. Total area and
the year data records begin is listed below for
each watershed:
