Air temperature is measured at 7 locations in rain gage
clearings throughout the experimental watersheds and at HQ. The
oldest air temperature record dates back to October 20, 1955 at
Station 1. Since that time, temperature measurements have been made
continuously using hygrothermographs housed in standard shelters.
Daily minimum and maximum temperature measurements are
collected.

SAMPLING DESIGN
Daily maximum and minimum
temperatures from up to 8 locations at HBEF have
been measured since October, 1955 using
mechanical hygrothermographs in weather
shelters. Air temperature is currently measured
at seven locations. Six locations are in rain
gage openings: 1/1A, 6, 14, 17, 23, and 24. One
location is the Headquarters building. At each
station, air temperature (and usually relative
humidity) are recorded by Belfort
hygrothermographs housed in standard Stevenson
screens, 5 feet off the ground. Standard,
maximum and minimum thermometers are housed in
the shelters alongside the hygrothermographs for
weekly calibration checks of the current, max
and min temperatures captured on the chart. The
hygrothermograph charts are changed weekly, at
which time the thermometers are read. Daily
maximum and minimum temperatures are read
manually from the charts. Correction for
disagreement with the standard thermometers are
seldom made as agreement is usually within 2
degrees F. The hygrothermographs are readjusted
annually and rotated from site to site after lab
calibration to prevent instrument bias. Maximum
and minimum temperatures are converted from
Fahrenheit to Celsius.

NOTES
Comparisons among stations should be made
with caution because data have not been corrected
for possible instrument bias. The value -99 is
entered for missing data when the weather station is
not operating. Otherwise, if a day is missed, the
value for that day has been estimated from values at
the other stations. Estimated values are not
flagged. The Fahrenheit to Celcius conversion and
rounding to whole degrees Centigrade leads to
considerable underrepresentation of -5, 0, 5, 10,
etc. values.
The data is physically located at the
USDA Forest Service, Durham, NH and was last updated
in 2013.
