The effect of soil freezing on soil cation and anion losses was assessed using zero-tension lysimeters placed in
plots of the snow removal experiment at the Hubbard Brook Expermental Forest. Four plots were used in which
one subplot accumulated snow cover at natural rates throughout the winter (C), while the second subplot had snow
removed from the first snowfall through early February (F). Replicate lysimeters were installed below the Oa and
within the Bs soil horizons and soil solution collected weekly for two winters (1997 - 1998 and 1998 - 1999).
This dataset includes solution chemistry measurements for individual lysimeters collected during that time period.

LOCATION DESCRIPTION
Four plots were selected within the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. Two plots were selected within sugar maple (SM)
stands and 2 plots were selected within yellow birch (YB) stands. The stands contained > 80% basal area of the target
species. At each plot, two subplots were used: one subplot accumulated snow cover at natural rates throughout the winter (C),
while the second subplot had snow removed from the first snowfall through early February (F). Replicate zero-tension lysimeters
were installed below the Oa and within the Bs soil horizons.
SAMPLING DESIGN
Lysimeters were constructed from PVC pipe that drained into 2-L polyethylene bottles. At each site, lysimeters were carefully
installed in the wall of excavated soil pits, immediately below the Oa horizon and within the Bs horizon. Soil pits were backfilled
to prevent accumulation of water and to eliminate freezing during winter months. Soil solution samples were collected at weekly to
monthly intervals in acid-washed polyethylene bottles and refrigerated at 4oC. Samples are from individual lysimeters.
DATA DESCRIPTION
Samples are from individual lysimeters.

The data is physically located at the Department of Plant Biology, University of Illinois, Urbana, IL and was last updated in November, 2002.
SampleID
Unique identifier for the sample based on several contributing factors. See Code Description for details.
ID is made up of the following factors which fits the pattern of SM1COa1:
Stand type - Sugar maple (SM) or yellow birch (YB);
Plot - 1 or 2 for each stand type;
Subplot (treatment) - natural (C) or snow removal (F);
N (variable present in only some samples)- denotes supplemental lysimeters installed in second year;
Soil horizon - Oa or Bs;
Replicate lysimeter - 1 or 2
Fits the pattern of this example: SM1COa1
